Positive Behaviour Support for Educational Authorities

Transforming school and education cultures with person‑centred behaviour support

Working With Educational Authorities

Educational settings face unique challenges: managing challenging behaviour, meeting SEND and SEMH needs, and sustaining positive school cultures under pressure. PBS UK partners with local authorities, multi‑academy trusts (MATs) and school leadership teams to embed PBS in schools and across education services. Our work helps reduce exclusions, improve student engagement, and deliver staff training that transforms day‑to‑day practice.

We align PBS with your existing behaviour policies, curriculum demands, and safeguarding frameworks. From whole‑school strategy development to targeted positive behaviour support plans, we create solutions that are practical, scalable, and sustainable.

  • Data-led behaviour audits and policy alignment
  • Customised PBS in schools strategy development
  • Whole-staff training on positive reinforcement
  • Targeted support for pupils with SEND/SEMH
  • Behaviour support planning for individuals
  • Ongoing coaching and impact monitoring

Our Approach to PBS in Schools & Educational Environments

We recognise that every school and every pupil is different. Our approach begins with a collaborative audit of your environment, behaviour data, and stakeholder perspectives, including students, families, and governors. We then co‑design an action plan rooted in positive behaviour support planning, ensuring strategies fit your timetable, staff capacity, and curriculum.

Our work is trauma‑informed and inclusive. We focus on building students’ skills – social communication, emotional regulation, and self‑esteem – through personalised reinforcement techniques. By training staff in positive reinforcement strategies and embedding consistent reinforcement across settings, we create an environment where every child feels valued, understood, and motivated.

Building More Inclusive Learning Environments

Educational success depends as much on emotional safety as academic instruction.

PBS UK helps you create classrooms where positive behaviour is actively reinforced, anxiety is managed proactively, and every pupil – from those with a high‑support learning disability, to those struggling with stress – can contribute fully. By focusing on daily routines, clear expectations, and genuinely personalised support, we foster learning environments that are calm, productive, and centred on student wellbeing.

FAQs | PBS In Education

What exactly is PBS in schools?

PBS (Positive Behaviour Support) in schools uses functional assessment to pinpoint why behaviours occur, then replaces them with person‑centred strategies – like verbal praise, structured routines, and environmental tweaks – to foster a positive learning climate.

How do you tailor PBS for pupils with SEND or SEMH needs?

We don’t use a one‑size‑fits‑all model. Instead, we:
  • Conduct sensory profiles and preference assessments
  • Map behaviour functions against each child’s EHCP targets
  • Co-create bespoke reinforcement schedules (stickers, tokens, special privileges)
  • Coach teaching assistants in de-escalation and trauma-informed practice
The result is a plan that dovetails with each pupil’s communication style and learning goals.

Why focus on positive reinforcement rather than punishment?

Punishment may stop unwanted behaviour temporarily, but it rarely teaches an alternative.

On the other hand, positive reinforcement builds new skills, strengthens intrinsic motivation, and helps students develop a positive self‑image: leading to deeper, more lasting change.

Can PBS really reduce school exclusions?

Yes. By addressing root causes (such as anxiety, communication barriers, or sensory overload) schools we’ve worked with have reported a significant drop in suspensions within a term, alongside improved attendance and engagement.

What kind of training do you offer for school staff?

We can offer various training pathways, including:
  • One-day CPD courses on PBS fundamentals
  • Bespoke workshops for SENCos and behaviour leads
  • Peer-mentoring programmes to sustain practice change
  • Follow-up coaching sessions to troubleshoot real-time challenges

How long before we see a difference?

Absolutely. Whether you run a drop‑in centre, a residential home, or a youth mentoring programme, we can deliver:

How do you ensure consistency across staff and settings?

We embed PBS through:
  • Clear protocols and visual flowcharts
  • Regular team briefings and reflective practice meetings
  • Shared data dashboards on behaviour incidents and rewards
  • Family-school partnerships to carry strategies into the home
This multi‑layered support keeps everyone on the same page, day after day.
